CHAPTER SIX

It was impossible to remove the smile from her face – and she had no wish to.

“A boy!” Abigail whispered under her breath. “A little boy for Katherine and Thomas – a boy!”

The night had been long, but by the time the sun had risen, there had been a new life in the town, and it had come into the world bawling with masses of dark black hair.

Katherine had wept with joy. “A son,” she had whispered, wiping his screaming face with some clean white linen. “My baby is here.”

Abigail had thrown herself into a chair near the door, tiredness in her very soul, but she was content. To see a new life enter the world, to be a part of his journey from cozy warmth to bright new world: was there anything like it? Would she ever experience something so sweet?

“Well done, my darling,” said Elizabeth fondly, stroking her sister’s hair and placing a cooling pad of wet cotton across her brow. “You did magnificently.”

Phoebe nodded. Her hair had been tied back with a piece of strong string Mariana had found at around three o’clock that morning, and she was gazing down at the vision of mother and child, wrapped in the bed, with a beaming smile.

“You rest now,” she said gently. “You will both need your strength for the days ahead. I will let Thomas know the good news.”

“And Mariana,” added Katherine, sighing as she looked down at the baby in her arms. “She wanted to help, and she will be sad to have missed it.”

“I will come down with you,” said Abigail, gathering up the soiled linens that needed soaking. She closed the door softly behind them, and left the two sisters to marvel at God’s creation.

“She did immensely well,” Phoebe whispered as they went down the stairs. “For a first child, that was remarkably easy.”

“Easy?” Abigail stared at her as they entered the kitchen. “That did not look easy to – ”

“How is she?” A frantic voice heralded them, and they saw Thomas jerk from the chair he was almost sleeping in. His hair was sticking up in all directions, as though he had been running his hands through it all night, and his eyes were bloodshot.

“Katherine is fine,” said Phoebe in a reassuring tone.

Abigail smiled. “And so is your son.”

“My – my son?” Thomas clapped his hands to his face and stared out at them over his beard as Mariana, seated in the chair opposite him, laughed. “Son – he is here? It . . . it is a boy, as she thought?”

Abigail nodded, and without another word, with more of a howl, Thomas raced past them and stomped up the stairs.

Phoebe burst into giggles. “I hope she had not just got him asleep, or his father will give him his second real shock in life!”

She threw herself down into the chair Thomas had just vacated, and put a hand to her face.

“Thank you, Mariana,” she said wearily, “for keeping Thomas occupied. He would have got under my feet if we had allowed him anywhere near her.
